Le P2P Estimé à 28 Milliards $ sur 5 Ans

Le marché mondial du peer-to-peer et des services de partage de fichiers sur Internet représenterait un chiffre d'affaires de 28 milliards de dollars sur 5 ans pour les opérateurs et les FAI, d'après Insight Research.
La société américaine d'études de marché note que les opérateurs mobiles et fixes sont plus nombreux à proposer des offres légales de téléchargement et de partage de fichiers à leurs clients en complément d'autres services IP.

Peut-être Vit-On dans une Simulation Logicielle - pfff! Geek is Sooo Cool

It makes perfect sense to imagine that the universe we live in is actually a computer simulation run by some superior intelligence in another universe. This hypothesis actually entails the only rational demonstration of the existence of God that ever convinced me.

Nick Bostrom, a philosopher at Oxford University, has a solid argument that sustains it. But it is still only hypothetical. As he puts it:

“My gut feeling, and it’s nothing more than that,” he says, “is that there’s a 20 percent chance we’re living in a computer simulation.”

Computers vs. Humans: a Page is Being Turned - as We Speak

Do you think computers can eventually beat humans at any mind game? I do.

I am no expert but here is a round-up of the most significant news in the field:

Chess

• Do you remember when Kasparov got beaten by IBM's "Deep Blue" in 1997? a major landmark. But that was a 1.5 tons computer with something like 4096 processors computing in parallel.
  Read this article for a reflection on the meaning of that event.
• In December 2006, the best chess player in the world got beaten by a PC running the 60$ software "Deep Fritz" on a 4 processor PC. What's funny is the human loser stating that he could do better and hoped to beat the software in 2-3 years. It seems more realistic to think his mobile phone will beat him by then!

Checkers

• This is pretty hot news right now (July 20, 2007): the great computer scientist named Jonathan Schaeffer from the University of Alberta just finished running an 18 years program that fully solved the game of checkers! The conclusions are pretty straightforward: play against him and you can't win, at best you will get to a draw. Put the other way, you can't lose at checkers unless you make a mistake.

Which leads us to Poker

• Again we hear about Jonathan Schaeffer and the University of Alberta. They just pitted their poker-playing software "Polaris" against 2 top poker pros: Phil (Unabomber) Laak and Ali Eslami. The humans won but it was a close match. And everyone anticipates that computers will probably get the edge pretty soon.
  I read that news on CBC too.

So, that's where we stand today.

I won't elaborate on the consequences of all this in this post. But knowing that I don't know if I want to start playing poker online: if someone programmed a super poker playing software, it could connect to online games undetected and suck me dry without anyone even breaking a sweat - that's not even funny.

Other implications have to do with higher than human intelligence. I'll cover that later.

Do You Blog English?

J'ai un blog en français (vous êtes dessus) et un en anglais.

Cela m'est arrivé plusieurs fois de poster la même chose en traduisant. Mais j'ai de moins en moins le courage et encore moins le temps. Donc voilà ce que je vais faire :

• Si c'est une histoire de français, ou pour signaler un bon article à lire en français, alors j'écris le billet en français dans mon blog en français - et c'est tout.
• Sinon j'écris en anglais, d'abord dans le blog en anglais, et ensuite dès que j'ai 1 min je copie le billet tel quel dans le blog en français.

A ce rythme là, tous les billets, FR et EN seront dans ce blog qui devient un peu bilingue au passage. Si vous avez d'autres idées ou d'autres expériences à partager, ça m'intéresse.

Comment marche l'économie virtuelle de Second Life ?

Le Sommet de la Singularité à San Francisco

Ce sommet est pour bientôt, le 8-9 septembre. Plus d'infos sur leur site ici. Mais savez-vous au moins de quoi il s'agit ?

C'est le bon moment pour revenir sur ce concept majeur et existentiel : la Singularité Technologique.

Le progrès technologique continue de s'accélérer et nous allons bientôt atteindre un seuil critique, où les ordinateurs doués d'intelligences artificielles (IA) seront aussi intelligents que les hommes.

Peu après, ces IA seront capables de concevoir et d'implémenter leur propres améliorations. S'en suivra une fuite en avant, puisque très rapidement cette IA développera de nouvelles IA d'une intelligence excédant celle d'un homme, et même de toute l'humanité.

Le système va s'emballer et transcender la condition humaine et matérielle. Difficile de prédire ce que deviendra alors le monde...

Ce cap, c'est la Singularité Technologique.

Quel intérêt y a-t-il à réfléchir à ça ?

Primo il faut réaliser que les conséquences de la singularité seront énormes. Du même ordre que l'apparition de la technologie chez Homo Sapiens, si vous voyez ce que je veux dire. La Singularité soulève donc de grands espoirs mais aussi des risques existentiels pour l'humanité.

Comment en profiter au max et éviter le pire ? Un des enjeux principaux est tout simplement de créer un intelligence supérieure "amicale" (friendly AI) - histoire d'éviter l'effet Terminator.

Alors les plus grands cerveaux y réfléchissent. Ils ont créé le SIAI: Singularity Institute for Artifical Intelligence. Ils ont un site Web. Et ils ont un blog.

Il est indispensable d'augmenter la visibilité de cette problématique dans l'opinion publique. Pour cela vous pouvez rejoindre le groupe anglophone sur Facebook : Technological Singularity Club.

I just got back from a short vacation in the South of France, following the launch of Podmailing ZER0-9, and you know what? a good news when I get home: Podmailing ZER0-9 got a rewarding article in P2P-Blog, written by Janko Roettgers.
